What is so special about Rose-Cut Diamonds?

Rose-cut Diamonds dates back to the early 15th century and were first made popular in the 1700's.

In more recent times they have become fashionable again especially with Artisan designer Jewellers looking to recreate "Antique" or "Medieval" style Jewellery.

Here are a few things which making them so special:

Glowing Lustre
Rose-Cut Diamonds differ to the traditional faceted pointy bottomed (brilliant cut) Diamonds that are commonly seen on display in Jewellery showrooms. Faceted Diamonds are cut to reflect the light back to the wearer and maximise sparkle, whereas Rose-cut Diamonds are more luminous than sparkly and allow the light to move through and across the stone, giving a more transparent glow and subtle shine.

More Value
The weight of Diamonds is measured in units of Carats and one of the plus points to Rose-Cut Diamonds is because of their flat bottoms they appear bigger compared to that of the same carat brilliant cut Diamond as the pointy part of the brilliant cut Diamond is hidden in the setting.
Because of this you get more visible diamond for your money with Rose-cut Diamonds.

Various Shapes
Also, having a flat base allows Rose-cut Diamonds to be cut into many different shapes. For example, Trillion (Triangular), Round, Oval, Pear, Kite, Coffin, Hexagon, Square, Cushion (Square with rounded corners and of course my favourite - Freeform.
Freeform is the name given to Diamonds and other gemstones that have no particularly recognised shape.

Unique character
There's no denying brilliant cut diamonds are very sparkly but Rose-cut Diamonds are quite often individually unique.

Rose-Cut Diamonds have an almost ethereal and "folklore" feel and look to them and are available in many colours including Salt & Pepper (Speckled Grey), Grey, Blue, Champagne, Clear White, Opaque White, Opaque Black, Green, Brown, Dark Red and Yellow.
Although Brilliant cut Diamonds are also available in various colours too, traditionally they tend to be clear gemstones with great clarity whereas Rose-cut Diamonds tend to have blemishes or what we call inclusions which in my mind only adds to the mystery and character of the gemstone.
